11. Where Do I Get Linux?

Contents of this section

There are currently two end-user installable distributions for Linux/Alpha available. One is Red Hat release 3.0.3/AXP and the other is Craftwork Linux v2.1/AXP. If you know of any other Linux/Alpha distributions, please send mail to axplinux@azstarnet.com

11.1 Red Hat

Red Hat is now distributing the Alpha version of its well-known Linux distribution! Red Hat 3.0.3/AXP is available now both on CD-ROM and via ftp. The distribution uses the RPM system (Red Hat Package Manager) which allows easy installation of both sources and binaries. Besides installing packages, it also allows to keep track of what's installed and it can even uninstall packages that you don't like anymore. But Red Hat 3.0.3 is a lot more than just RPM. Be sure to check their web site for all the details.

The Red Hat distribution is available via ftp from the Red Hat site . Mirror sites all over the world are available as well.

11.2 Craftwork Linux

Craftworks Linux v2.1/AXP is now available for Linux/Alpha machines. Its main features are security through shadow passwords and ease of installation. It includes gcc-2.7.2, g++ and libg++, as well as the GNU FORTRAN compiler (g77). Detailed information on supported platforms and features can be found at the Crafwork home page .

11.3 The Sources

The Linux/Alpha homepage contains a list of ftp sites and mirrors that are used by the developers to make the latest and greatest version of various programs available. The Linux/Alpha home page is located here .

Of course, the regular Linux ftp sites such as ftp://sunsite.unc.edu:/pub/Linux or ftp://tsx-11.mit.edu/pub/linux are good for Linux/Alpha, too.

11.4 Motif

Motif is, for better or worse, software that costs money. The good news is that it's at long last available for Linux/Alpha. The source of Motif for Linux/Alpha is MetroLink .
